Senior Project: Tea in Five Acts
An Exploration of the History and Practice of Tea Around the World
Abstract: Tea is an ancient and popular drink that has a multitude of significant historical and cultural implication throughout the world. Traditions, community, and even elaborate ceremonies have all formed around the consumption of this steeped leaf beverage. This project is a comparative analysis of the history and practice of tea use in 5 countries around the world. Through this research I will explore the formation of community built around tea, past and present. The five countries with strong histories of tea drinking that I have chosen are Russia, Japan, England, China, and Morocco. My research will include a literature review of the history and culture of tea in each country, interviews with experts in tea culture, and participant observation through reenactments of traditional tea ceremonies and reflections from participants. Although there is a large variety of research and books about tea, especially for China, Japan and England, there is much less accessible information about tea in Russia and Morocco and a number of other countries around the world. My goal with this research is to create a personal and straightforward book that generates interest in tea and has the potential to inspire reenactments by readers and form community through tea drinking.
